Top of the Pops is a throwback music party game based on all the music you used to tune in to watch and listen to on the TV Sensation Top of the Pops! Prepare for a two-part music battle. In round 1 shout out (or sing) songs against the clock. In round 2 get your team to guess the artist by saying one word, quoting lyrics or murdering one of their hits on your kazoo. This isn’t a trivia game, so you don’t need to know obscure facts about Boney M’s back catalogue or anything like that.
To begin, you split into two teams. Next, grab your stage, board buzzer and cards and place them in the middle of the table. For round one, both teams pick a player to represent them in the buzzer battle. Then you flip over a head-to-head card - for example: “Songs containing the word love” or “Songs that mention a colour” - and read it out loud. As soon as you think of a song, you shout it out and hit the buzzer. Your opponent then has just 15 seconds to think of a new answer and fire it back. It then goes back to the first player and so on until someone can’t think of an answer and the time runs out.
This takes you on to round 2, and this one’s the main event. The winning player from round 1 takes 9 artist cards from the middle, making sure the rest of the team don’t see, and chooses 3 to keep. The rest are handed to their opponent who secretly chooses 3 cards for themselves and discards the rest. Each player then chooses where on the stage to place each card. Placing a card on One Word means you can only use one word to describe that artist, if it’s on lyrics you need to quote or sing lyrics from one of the artists’ songs and if it’s on kazoo you must play one of the artists’ songs using a kazoo.
When both teams are ready, the winner of the buzzer battle goes first. You hold down the buzzer to start the 30-second timer and then get going. Whenever your team guesses correctly you flip over the artist card and move on to the next one. If the buzzer hasn’t gone off you can try and steal some of the other teams’ cards. Once the buzzer goes, your turn is over and it’s the other teams turn. If they go through all their cards before time runs out they can go for any of the cards the other team missed. In the end, teams collect any faceup cards they won and cards they didn’t guess get discarded.
As the show goes on, you’ll end up collecting a lot more artist cards. If you have three from the same genre, you can trade them in and steal one from the other team. Once a team has collected an artist card from all 8 genres they win! But to win those cards you’ll have to choose 2 new players for the buzzer battle and get ready to go through it all again.
